Sikkim Police beat Tibetan National Sports Association 4-2
Gangtok, Oct 5 (UNI) Sikkim Police began their campaign with a 4-2 win over Tibetan National Sports Association (TNSA) in the inaugural match of the 28th All India Governor's Gold Cup Football Tournament at the Palzor stadium here today.
Playing an attacking game, the hosts led 2-0 in the lemon break with Chhenku Sherpa and Lokesh Lanchhanu scoring one goal each in the first and 26th minutes respectively.
But in the second half, TNSA bounced back into the reckoning with Tenzing Tsering and Dawa Norbu reducing the margin and restoring parity respectively (2-2).
Stung by the reverse, Sikkim Police went the whole hog and took the lead through Kamal Bagdas in the 71st minute (3-2) and just before the long whistle Suman Dewan buttressed the lead (4-2).
The outcome of the match would have been different, had the TNSA been able to cash in on some gilt-edged oportunities.
Tomorrow, Army XI will meet Punjab Police and Sikkim Sports Academy will lock horns with Calcutta Customs in two preliminary knock-out matches.
Earlier, Governor V Rama Rao inaugurated the tournament, organised by the Sikkim Football Association.
