Mangalore situation under control

Mangalore, Oct 5 (UNI) Tension prevailed in the city since last night after a mini lorry allegedly carrying cows to a slaughter house hit a jeep at Kudroli in city limits, leading to stone pelting incidents in several areas and police lathi charge.

The bandh call, given by the city unit of the Bajrang Dal and Mangalore City Go Rakshana Samiti today in protest against the incident, evoked total response. All shops and business establishments downed shutters and buses remained off the roads.

Schools and colleges had declared a holiday.

Police resorted to mild lathi charge at Farangipet on the city outskirts and at B C Road when an irate mob tried to block roads by burning tyres and pelting stones at passersby, injuring five people, including a policeman.

State Home Minister M P Prakash told mediapersons in Bangalore that the situation had been brought under control.

Superintendent of Police B Dayanand told UNI that road blockades and stone pelting incidents were reported from various parts of the city. At least five vehicles and a shop were damaged in the violence.

Ten police platoons had been deployed in the troubled areas and 24 platoons of Karnataka State Reserve Police had been sought to maintain law and order in the district. However, the situation was now under control, he added.

Meanwhile, prohibitory orders under section 144 of CrPC was clamped in Mangalore and Batwal taluks from this afternoon.

Police have rounded up about 50 people in connection with the violence.

Mr Dayanand said it was not possible to quantity the injured.

''Scores of people have been injured. Reports from various police stations are awaited,'' he added.
