Koda to seek central fund for flood affected people

Dumka, Oct 5 (UNI) Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda today said he would seek central assistance to meet the relief measures for flood affected victims in Santhal Pargana in which property worth hundreds of crores was destroyed besides affecting 3,66,000 people.

At least 16 people were killed in the floods that occurred late last month following continuous downpour in the region.

Mr Koda made this statement after reviewing the relief measures.

Last month continuous downpour for weeks severely affected six districts-Dumka, Deoghar, Godda, Pakur, Sahebganj and Jamtara- in which about 3,66,000 people were estimated to be affected, the Chief Minister told reporters.

He said the government has impressed upon the Centre to give adequate money from the national calamity fund.

Mr Koda said more than 31 cattle heads were killed in the floods and crops spread over 10839 hectares destroyed.

He instructed the officials to work on war footing to stop spread of epidemics and ensure that the relief materials reach the poor people urgently.

The Chief Minister distributed cheques to 230 families in Dumka, ten in Pakur and 30 in Godda.

The review meeting was attended by Coal Minister Sibu Soren, ministers-Mr Harinarayan Rai, Bandhu Tirkey and Nalin Soren, MP from Godda Furkan Ansari and local MLA Stephen Marandi.

The state government has so far distributed relief materials to the tune of Rs 28 lakh.
