HC permits PDK to hold public meeting
Chennai, Oct 5 (UNI) The Madras High Court today directed the authorities to permit the Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (PDK) to conduct a public meeting in support of the cause of Sri Lankan Tamils at Vellore on October 10, after imposing necessary conditions.
Justice K Chandru gave the directive to the Inspector of Police, Sachuvachari Police Station, Vellore, on a petition by the PDK, seeking a direction to permit it to conduct the meeting.
In its petition, the PDK said it had conducted a number of public meetings in and around Tamil Nadu condemning the indiscriminate killing of Tamils in Sri Lanka. Recently, the Sri Lankan army had killed Tamils in the name of attacking LTTE cadre. The whole state including all political parties condemned the indiscriminate killing of destitute female children in Sencholai Camp at Sri Lanka on August 14, 2006, allegedly by the Sri Lankan Air force.
The political parties had also raised their voice against the Sri Lanka and requested the Indian Government to intervene. The PDK also conducted a number of peaceful public meetings, demonstrations, human chain protest and dharna in and around the state. While so, the PDK proposed to conduct a public meeting in support of Sri Lankan Tamils on October 3 at Vellore and an application was made to the Inspector of Police, Sachuvachari Police Station, seeking permission. But it was refused on the ground that it would create law and order problem and in view of local body elections.
