Deep Sengupta upsets German GM David Baramidze in World Jr Chess

Yerevan, Armenia, Oct 5 (UNI) International Master Deep Sengupta scored an upset victory over German Grandmaster David Baramidze while compatriot Deepan Chakkravarthy also won his game over much lower rated Richard Pile of France on a fruitful day for Indians in the second round of the World Junior Chess Championship here.

In other matches, GM norm holder Abhijeet Gupta beat Vytautas Vaznonis of Lithuania. Rahul Sangma was the only one to lose his game beaten by Bassem Amin of Egypt in the 13-round tournament.

After two rounds Sengupta and Grandmaster Deepan shared top spot along with 10 other players with two points to their credit.

In the other significant match of the day, highly rated GM Yue Wang of China was held to a draw by local player Zaven Andriasian though another top rated Chinese GM Hao Wang had an easy outing over Tomasz Warakomski of Poland.

All the other top players had no problem in winning their games.

Playing with white Sengupta took 65 minutes to beat David in 49 moves.

However, Indian girls had a tough time with only Woman Grandmaster Tania Sachdev registering a win over compatriot Mary Ann Gomes while all her compatriots put up below par performances.

Woman GM Dronavalli Harika drew with much lower rated Olga Dolgova of Russia while Grandmaster Eesha Karavade, Kruttika Nadig and Soumya Swaminathan lost their respective games.

Tania Sachdeva shares joint lead with eight other players with two points while Harika has 1.5 points and Eesha, Kruttika, Gomes have one points each.

In other games not featuring Indians, WGM Elena Tairova of Russia, WGM Salome Melia of Georgia and WGM Thi Bao Tram Hoang of Vietnam were upset by lower rated players.
