CBI raids 16 places in Mumbai, Hooghly for custom duty evasion

New Delhi, Oct 5 (UNI) The CBI today conducted raids at 16 places in Mumbai and Hooghly on the premises of Customs officials, including an Assistant Commissioner, and others in connection with the alleged duty evasion.

The raids made at 15 places in Mumbai and one in Hooghly (West Bengal) were on the premises of Asst Commissioner (Customs) T K Chakravarty, Appraiser P Kairo and two others, according to CBI sources.

Cases have been registered against three Customs employees for hatching conspiracy in collusion with exporters and customs house clearing agents for levying less duty than due.

While Rs 17 lakh cash and jewellery worth five lakh were recovered from Chakravarty's premises which included three flats in Mumbai, Vashi and Hooghly, Rs ten lakh from seven accounts (in his wife's name), two lakh in FDRs and a house were unearthed from Kairo's possession.

Two other accused are custom house agents.
