SOG personnel killed 6 others injured in Srinagar fidayeen attack

Srinagar, oct 4 (uni) A head constable of the Special Operation Group (SOG) of jammu and kashmir was killed and six others were wounded in a heavy exchange of fire between security forces and militants of the Al-Masoorain outfit, who made an abortive bid to storm the heavily-guarded Dashnami Akhara building, housing the holy mace of Lord Shiva, near here today.

A head constable of SOG Showkat Ahmad was killed and two other jawans were injured when militants fired upon them after they tried to storm standard hotel in which the militants were holed up, this afternoon.

However, a group of security forces wearing bullet proof jackets have managed to enter the hotel building, they said.

Earlier, one person was presumed dead after he was hit by a bullet and fell on the road near the gate of the hotel. However, he was taken to hospital where doctors declared him alive and operated upon him. However, he was still unconscious.

Sources said two other persons were also injured in the firing.

A driver was also injured at Dalgate, about two km from the spot, after a stray bullet, believed to be fired by the security forces in the air at Budshah Chowk, hit him.

A senior CRPF officer told UNI over phone from the spot that a final assault is being launched to neutralise the militants hiding inside the hotel.

I am on the top of the hotel building trying to reach the militants, he said.
