Probe ordered into Anantnag firing, case filed against Army

Srinagar, Oct 4 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir Police today registered a case against the Army personnel allegedly involved in killing two members of a family in Kokernag area of Anantnag district late last night even as the state government ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident, official sources said.

The inquiry was ordered following massive protests by the locals against the incident.

Anantnag Deputy Commissioner G A Peer ordered the probe after he along with senior Army, police and civil officials visited the area this afternoon, they added.

The sources said Additional District Development Commissioner Jaipal Singh has been asked to conduct the inquiry and submit his report by October 24.

Mr Peer said the state government would provide relief to the affected families immediately under the rules. The Army officers have also assured help.

Hashim Ali's 25-year-old daughter Misra and 18-year-old son Mohammad Ashraf Naikoo were killed while his another son Abdul Karim and his wife Lateefa were wounded when the Army personnel opened fire on them during an ambush at Ahlan Adool village in Kokernag area of Anantnag district.

The Army personnel mistook them as militants. Thousands of people later took to streets at Kokernag in protest and demanded inquiry into the incident. Shops and other business establishments remained closed and traffic was off the roads.
