Poetic images in sculptures
Pathanamthitta, Oct 4 (UNI) Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee today said he could feel the earthiness and the nativeness of Kadammanitta Ramakrishnan's poems through their ''sculptural transcription''.
He was speaking after dedicating to the nation the ''Sculpture Park'' depicting the poetic images embedded in the works of noted modern Malayalam Poet Kadammanitta Ramakrishnan at his home-village Kadammanitta today.
Mr Chatterjee said the sculptural presentation was as novel as the poetry of Kadammanitta. The sculptural park gave a new meaning to the poems, the higher aesthetics of which appealed to all sections of readers.
The Speaker said Kadamanitta's poems reflected his concern for the vulnerable sections of society. It was only when art and culture begin to reflect or portray the lives of the common man they became relevant for the people, impacting their lives, he said.
Mr Chatterjee opined that Kadammanitta as a poet had provoked the readers to think differently and see things from a different perspective.
The Speaker was of the opinion that Kadammanitta, who rose from a rural background, had democratised modern Malayalam poetry.
He complimented Sculptor K P Soman for his yeoman service in sculpting the wonderful images of Kadammanitta poetry and setting up a sculpture park at a cost of Rs 20 lakh, the ''first of its kind in the country''.
''The sculptures in this park are not just lifeless sand and stone, but they breathe life, just as the characters in Kadammanitta poems,'' said Mr Chatterjee.
State Minister for Culture M A Baby, MPs K Francis George, P J Kurian, C S Sujatha and Chengara Surendran and Mr K Sivadasan Nair, MLA, were present.
