Govt should observe 'mosquito eradication day': Chandy
Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 3 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly Oommen Chandy today suggested the government should observe a ''mosquito eradication day'' to create awareness among people about the outbreak of Chikungunya in the state.
Talking to Newspersons at the Assembly Complex here, he said since there was no effective medicine to contain the dreaded disease, the outbreak could only be checked through a campaign on garbage disposal and mosquito eradication Mr Chandy suggested the government should come up with a garbage disposal policy and mosquito eradication day with the participation of one crore people, including students and members from Kudumbasree.
Alleging that the government had not taken any serious action to control the outbreak of the viral fever, which claimed more than 65 people, he said the government had failed miserably to coordinate all the machinaries and setting up a crisis management in this regard.
On Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan's remark that the UDF was taking the issue for political mileage, he said it was ''quite unfortunate''.
Alleging that even after one month, the government had not posted sufficient doctors and para medical staff in the effected area, the Opposition Leader said steps should be taken to appoint sufficient doctors in the area and if necessary appointments should be made on contract basis or service of retired doctors sought.
Mr Chandy also suggested that the government should give free ration and medicine to those who wished to treat the disease at their houses itself, as it would help to reduce the increase of patients in hospitals.
