Azad satisfied with rehabilitation of J
Srinagar, Oct 3 (UNI) Expressing satisfaction over rehabilitation and reconstruction of areas devastated by the powerful earthquake on October 8 last year, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today said the liberal central assistance has helped in rebuilding these with modern facilities.
Addressing a public gathering at Kamalkote in border town of Uri, he said the solidarity expressed by the entire country with the people of the state at the hour of need and the keen interest shown by UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh infused energy in the administration and rejuvenated the will of survivors to overcome difficulties.
''Today, we can reckon with achievements registered for showing quick response to the needs of quake survivors and launching a massive reconstruction programme,'' Mr Azad added.
He said several voluntary organisations, NGOs, the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation and many state governments also provided unprecedented help in relief efforts.
The Chief Minister said highest ever relief for construction of houses has been given to the people and adequate community centres, shelter sheds provided to them well before the onset of last winter.
The reconstruction of public infrastructure in the quake-affected areas has been given due consideration and priority so that modern villages were built with all basic amenities, he added.
Mr Azad said he rushed to quake-hit areas from Chandigarh where he was participating as a Union Minister in the Chief Ministers' Conference soon after receving the news of quake.
The Chief Minister said since then he has remained associated with each and every aspect of rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations and personally monitored all programmes aimed at rebuilding quake-hit areas.
By channelising efforts, he said huge quantities of relief in the shape of tents, blankets, essentials and other required commodities were received from all over the country.
Mr Azad said next of the kin of 818 people who lost their lives in the quake would get relief of Rs one lakh as announced by the Prime Minister. He asked authorities to ensure that construction of houses were completed well before the onset of winter.
The Chief Minister also directed that the balance amount of relief should be paid to beneficiaries within next 15 days. He later distributed cheques among the affected families and gave passbooks to orphans.
