South Africa promises to support Indo-US N deal in NSG
Pretoria, Oct 2 (UNI) Giving up its reservations on the Indo-US Nuclear deal, South Africa today openly came out in its support saying it would fully back the matter when it came up before the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).
''We have no problem with that. When the matter comes up (at the Nuclear Suppliers Group), we will support that,'' South African President Thabo Mbeki said at a joint press conference alongwith Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
South Africa, which is an important member of the 45-nation powerful nuclear lobby, is rich in uranium reserves.
Mr Mbeki said he had detailed discussions with the Prime Minister on this issue. ''We are awaiting the outcome of the US Congress decision...'' The two were addressing the press conference after a marathon session of talks which extended well beyond its scheduled time.
Earlier, the Prime Minister said in response to a question that the two leaders had discussed the Indo-US civilian nuclear energy agreement.
After it is passed by the US Congress, the matter would come up before the NSG.
''I expect when that matter reaches the NSG, South Africa will take a sympathetic stand on India's concerns,'' he said.
Mr Mbeki said the matter had been discussed with the NSG.
