Burning of Ravana's effigy culminates Dussehra festivity in capital
New Delhi, Oct 2 (UNI) Burning of the effigies of the Ravana, his brother Kumbhkaran and son Meghnad brought to an end a week of festivities marking the Vijaydashmi festival in the capital.
Gracing the burning of the effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakaran and Meghnad at the famous Subhash Maidan, the Parade grounds and the historical Ramleela Gounds this evening was UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, along with a host of dignitaries like Delhi Lt Governor B L Joshi and Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
As the effigies went up in flames at the famous Subhash Maidan, historical Ramleela Gounds and several other areas of Delhi, it signified triumph of good over evil, a message that symbolises the festival of Dussehra.
The colourful function at the Subhash Maidan saw the burning of the effigies being preceded by release of colourful ballooons in the sky.
The burning of effigies at the Ramleela Grounds was preceded by the bursting of crackers which lend a colouful look to the occasion.
Later, Ms Gandhi, who was here with her daughter Priyanka Vadra, wielded the bow to set off the burning of Ravana's effigy.
The burning of the effigies also marked the finale of the nearly-week-long Ramleelas being held at the historical Ramleela ground and in various parts of the city.
The sites of the various Ramleelas also witnessed a burst in cultural activities like fairs and song and dance programmes.
Simultaneously, the immersion of idols of the Goddess Durga on the banks of the Yamuna river marked the end to the Durga Puja festival.
