1.5 lakh police personnel for local body polls: SEC

Kancheepuram, Oct 2 (UNI) About 1.5 lakh policemen will be on duty for the October 13 and 15 local body elections in Tamil Nadu, State Election Commissioner (SEC) D Chandrasekharan said today.

Speaking to newspersons after a review meeting with officials at the District Collectorate here, Mr Chandrasekharan said they would include personnel from Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Election officials had been asked to maintain a strict vigil on sensitive booths and a list of rowdy elements was under preparation for surveillance.

So far, about Rs 30 crore had been spent on election arrangements including printing of ballot papers and security.

Besides, a three-phase training for the polling was being imparted to the officials.

As many as 18,500 aspirants for various local body posts had been elected unopposed, the SEC said.
