No need to hold special session of state legislature: Deshmukh

Kolhapur, Oct 1 (UNI) Ruling out a special session of the state legislature to discuss the Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh today said his government has already approached the Supreme Court for an early solution.

Talking to reporters at the Government Circuit House here, he said the people of the state had collectively had launched various agitations in support of the demand of the Marathi people, living in Karnataka, to merge Marathi-speaking areas with Maharashtra.

Despite the long fight -- spanning four decades -- justice to the Marathi-speaking people has not been given, hence, the state government approached the Supreme Court for proper and early justice, Mr Deshmukh pointed out.

''The state government is prepared to fight the case, using expert lawyers to strongly present our position,'' he said, adding that the whole of Maharashtra was behind their compatriots across the state boundary.
