Chinese bus plunges off bridge, 30 dead

BEIJING, Oct 1: A fully laden bus plunged off a bridge in the southwestern city of Chongqing today, killing 30 people, the official Xinhua news agency said.

The bus drove through a guardrail of a bridge spanning the Jialing River in Chongqing, landing on the river bank, it said.

Twenty people were injured in the accident, the cause of which was under investigation, Xinhua said.

The incident comes at the start of seven days of holidays to mark China's national day.

China's roads are the deadliest in the world. Traffic accidents killed almost 100,000 people last year, or 270 a day.
