Attacks by wild animals on rise in J&K; dos and don'ts issued

Srinagar, Oct 1 (UNI) In view of the increase in attacks on people by wild animals in the state in the recent past, the Wildlife Department of Jammu and Kashmir has issued dos and don'ts to prevent recurrence of such incidents.

In an appeal, it said various incidents of attacks by wild animals such as black bear and leopards have been reported resulting in deaths and critical injuries to people and livestock in forest areas of the state.

The department advised the people to take some precautionary measures to minimise the incidents of direct man-animal conflicts.

It asked the people not to move alone in forest areas. Children and women were more vulnerable to attacks by leopards and black bears and these could be prevented, if they move in groups.

The Wildlife Protection Department advised the people to carry sticks while moving in the forest area or dense agriculture fields.

''Always move on regular forest paths and avoid short cuts. Do not chase or try to go near a wild animal. Livestock taken to pastures inside the forest area or near crop fields in hilly areas must be attended to by three to four people,'' it added.

Some sound producing device such as a bell, should be put around the neck of few cattle to make some sound or alarm in case of danger from wildlife.

In villages, the department said people venture out in open and forest areas early mornings or late evening hours which coincides with peak activity of animals and as such, they become more vulnerable to attacks.

It asked the people to complete all outdoor activities during the day time and make arrangements for lighting near habitations.
