Tamil Nadu beat Delhi 1-0 to move into last eight
Faridabad, Sep 29 (UNI) Tamil Nadu eliminated a lacklustre Delhi through an extra time goal to advance into the quarterfinals of the 61st National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy here today.
Raman Vijay scored the all important goal in the second half of the extra time (108th minute) to dash Delhi's hopes even as the Tamil Nadu camp erupted in joy.
Defence was the name of the game and the south Indian team did well to check dangerous forward and Delhi captain Sunil Chhetri thus effectively blunting what had been a one-man army attack throughout the tournament.
After a drab first half with several muffed chances, both sides pressed for goal after the breather. However, the logjam continued and the match went into extra time.
Just when it seemed the match could go into the penalty shoot out, Raman caught the Delhi defence napping and scored an opportunist goal to put his team ahead.
Delhi pressed for the equaliser which wasn't there to be and Tamil Nadu did well to hang on to the lead to advance into the last eight.
