Remake of 1975 blockbuster Jai Santoshi Maa releases today
New Delhi, Sep 29 (UNI) More than three decades after the stupendous success of 'Jai Santoshi Maa', that made the Goddess a household name in the country, the remake of the mythological film releases across India today albeit with an all "new contemporary look".
The first of the series of Bollywood remakes to hit the silver screen, with Farhan Akhtar's remake of 'Don' and Ram Gopal Verma's remake of 'Sholay' to follow in the coming months, 'Jai Santoshi Maa', like its original 1975 version, seeks to portray the power of faith and how it can change one's life entirely.
Being produced by the Percept picture company and directed by erstwhile assistant to Yash chopra Ahmed Siddiqui, 'Jai Santoshi Maa' is the story of Mahima, an ardent devotee of Santoshi Maa and Anuraag, a musician. It's a saga of all the hardships they face, with no complaints or regrets, and how they overcome these hardships with the blessings of the Goddess.
The story of the film revolves around this college girl Mahima, played by 'refreshing' newcomer Nushrat Bharucha, whose father is a music teacher and the mother is a devotee of Santoshi Maa. She is married to Anuraag,a young man whose passion is music. A lot of hardships come the way of Mahima and Anuraag as the marriage is against the will of his family. Fed up with the humiliation, Anuraag decides to try his luck elsewhere, while Mahima stays with her in-laws where she is constantly harassed by every member of the family. It is then that Mahima starts her 'solah-shukravaar vrats' for Goddess Santoshi, withstanding with a smile all the trials and tribulations with faith in the Goddess. Ultimately, Santoshi Maa makes all her wishes come true and also bless her husband with the success he ever wished for.
Starring Rakesh Bapat and Nushrat Bharucha in the lead, the film has music by Anu Malik [who is also giving the music of 'Zindaggi Rocks' and 'Jaan-E-Mann'] with lyrics by Swanand Kirkire, whose songs in 'Lagey Rahe Munnabhai' are now making waves. Though, like the original film, the 'Jai Santoshi Maa' deals with the protagonist's ardent devotion to 'Santoshi Maa', the film has been given a modern look in terms of its settings as well as in its characterisations.
