Geelani, Malik supporters clash over public meeting on Guru
Baramulla, Sep 29 (UNI) Several activists of the breakaway Hurriyat Conference, led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), headed by Yasin Malik, were wounded after they clashed with each other in Sopore town of this district over addressing a public meeting against a death sentence to Mohammad Afzal Guru, convicted in the Parliament attack case.
The clash erupted when Hurriyat (breakaway faction) activists prevented the JKLF Chief from addressing a public meeting at the main chowk in Sopore town this afternoon.
Several hundred JKLF activists and supporters had gathered at the venue where Mr Malik was scheduled to address the gathering.
The heated exchange soon turned violent, resulting in injuries to several activists of the two groups, including Hurriyat leader Showkat Ahmed.
Later, Mr Malik, in an attempt to prevent the situation from deteriorating further, decided to change the venue of his public meeting from the main chowk to Jamia Masjid in Sopore town.
