Sania upsets Martina Hingis in Korea Open; enters quarter-finals

Seoul, Sep 28 (UNI) Sania Mirza scripted a sensational come-from-behind victory against Martina Hingis, beating the top seed and world number eight Swiss 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 in the second round of the Korea Open here today.

The 19-year-old Indian ace, who was at her devastating best today, thus revenges her semi-final loss to Hingis in the Sunfeast Open in Kolkata last week.

After losing the first set in a see-saw battle, the Hyderabadi subjected the former world number one rival to abject surrender in the second set by despatching powerful groundstrokes past the Swiss and took the set without dropping a single game.

Hingis came back strongly in the decider, but the world number 59 Indian held on to her nerves and broke the top seed in the ninth game to pocket the set and the match for an upset victory.

Sania will now play Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain in the quarter-finals of the 145,000 dollar Tier IV hardcourt tournament.
