Residents decide to boycott local bodies elections

Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, Sep 28 (UNI) Annoyed by the laxity of the authorities concerned in preventing encroachments at an Irrigation tank, the residents of Koothapar Town Panchayat has decided to boycott the ensuing local bodies elections.

The residents told UNI that they have unanimously decided to boycott the elections to protest against the laxity of district authorities in checking and preventing encroachments at 250 acre Koothapar irrigation tank, which is the main source of water for the panchayat.

They alleged that the authorities concerned had failed to take any action despite repeated complaints.

''Since two years, we have been submitting petitions seeking their intervention, but so far no action has been taken'', they said.

To mark their protest, not a single nomination has been filed for the civic polls in Koothapar town panchayat.

Even major political parties including DMK and AIADMK had not fielded their candidates for the polls in Koothapar town panchayat.

Official sources told UNI that no nominations were filed till September 27 or on September 27, the last date of filing nominations.
