New Delhi, Sep 28 (UNI) President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam has been selected to receive the 2nd Phillip Tobias Award for his outstanding contributions to science and technology.

Dr Kalam was invited by South African President Thabo Mbeki to deliver the Phillip Tobias Lecture as part of the Award Ceremony.

In response to this request, Dr Kalam delivered the Phillip Tobias Lecture today through a video link from Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The Phillip Thobias Award and Lecture was instituted by the South African government to honour the contribution to research by Prof Phillip Tobias in the fields of genetics, through anatomical studies to palaeo-anthropology.

Prominent international scholars in the field of science and technology are invited to be keynote speakers at the Lecture to share their experiences and knowledge with the South African community. The Lecture, thus, serves as a vehicle to promote science and technology, especially among historically disadvantaged students and to promote the culture of research and development to foster excellence in South African higher education and research institutions, according to a release from Indian High Commission in Pretoria.

The inaugural Phillip Tobias Lecture was delivered in 2004 by Prof Sydney Brenner who won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2002.
