Visakhapatnam, Sep 28 (UNI) Naval Chief Admiral Arun Prakash today underscored the growing importance of the sea with the discovery of oil, gas and other resources.

Addressing a gathering after a ceremonial farewell parade at the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) here, Admiral Prakash said the nation's economic development was highly dependent on the sea which was also becoming dangerous due to piracy, smuggling of arms and ammunition.

India's huge merchant shipping fleet and other assets required protection, he said, emphasising the important role played by the Navy in safeguarding the assets.

Considering its growing importance, the government planned to meet the Navy's future requirements which will materialise by 2017 or 2020,'' he said.

Pointing out that the ENC was highly involved in furthering the government's look east policy aimed at maintaining cordial relations with India's neighbours.

He said the force was also contemplating to open another base, south of Vishakapatnam.

On a personal note, Admiral Prakash observed the ENC was of special significance to him as he joined the Navy in this command 40 years ago.
