Greece priases India's stand on Cyprus

New Delhi, Sep 28 (UNI) Greece has praised India's stand on Cyprus and its efforts to build good relations with the countries in its region.

Greece conveyed the appreciation to the Indian Parliamentary delegation, led by Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee now visiting that country.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat today said that during the visit, the delegation held talks with various leaders, including Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis, Presiding officer of Greece Parliament Anna Benaki-Psarouda, where India's consistent position on Cyprus and its efforts to build good relations with the countries in its region came in for praise.

During the interactions, both the countries expressed desire to further increase bilateral contacts and relations in diverse fields and strengthen cooperation in global forums such as the UN.

Geek the leaders also supported India's efforts to contain terrorism while remaining strongly committed to democratic principles and human rights.

Greece Prime Minister Karamanlis and President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias, sharing a long-standing and traditional relations between the two countries, expressed the desire to take Indo-Greek relations to "new levels".

Mr Chatterjee, who was honoured with the Medal of Honour of the Greek Parliament, sought the support of that country for India's candidate for the UN Secretary General post Shashi Tharoor.
