Doubling and electrification of tracks: SR submits report

Tiruchirapalli, Sep 28 (UNI) The Southern Railways (SR) has prepared a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for doubling and electrification of tracks between Tuticorin and Chennai for an estimated cost of Rs 2000 crore, SR General Manager Thomas Varghese said.

Addressing a press conference, Mr Varghese said the project report had been forwarded to the Railway Board for their perusal.

On different ongoing projects, he said electrification of the Tiruchirapalli-Villupuram section would be completed by March 2007 and an additional Broad Gauge (BG) platform would be constructed in Trichy.

The Gauge conversion of Manamadurai-Rameswaram section, including the Pamban Bridge would be completed before the end of March, next year, he said.

He said new trains would be introduced after the Local bodies elections in the state. A Tri-weekly train in Chennai-Mangalore Section, a weekly train in Chennai-Nagercoil section and Chennai-Coimbatore section would be introduced.

On passenger amenities, he said in 2006, the SR had allotted Rs 27 crore compared to Rs 16 crore in 2005.
