Kolkata, Sep 28 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has written to Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh asking for a technical university under National Institute of Technology (NIT) in the state.

The state would require some 1,00,000 additional IT professionals in next few years as many IT companies setting up shop. A technical university is required for churning out industry-ready professionals, Mr Bhattacharjee said while inaugurating "Technopolis", the country's first green IT infrastructure.

The state government has set up an academic council under the IT department to ensure industry-ready professionals, he said adding about 45,000 professionals have been working in about 250 IT companies in the state.

Around Rs 125 crore has been invested for setting up the 7,75,000 square feet IT park which has received the Gold certification under US Green Building Council's leadership in energy and environmental design rating system.

By virtue of being a green building and adopting energy efficient technology, Technopolis has been successful in saving up to 35.5 per cent energy consumption, Rahul Saraf of Technopolis Phoenix Software Limited said.

The energy efficiency would lead to indirect reduction in emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, thereby making the project eligible to earn carbon credits, he said.

It would be first such project in the world to be registered under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) as a clean development mechanism (CDM) project, he said.
