8,000 MTs garbage dumped daily in national capital: Dikshit

Chandigarh, Sep 28 (UNI) The national capital bears the brunt of 8,000 metric tonnes of garbage every day with more than half of it scattered unmanageably in parks and other open spaces.

This was described as a grave matter of concern for the entire National Capital Region (NCR) by Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit at the northern states Chief Ministers' Conclave here today.

''Let me point out that the upcoming cities like Noida and Gurgaon will also soon face a similar problem in the absence of any solution, she said, stressing on the need to have common garbage treatment plants in the NCR.

Ms Dixit urged her counterparts of the neighbouring Haryana and Uttar Pradesh and other northern states to increase the green cover and adopt CNG fuelling systems.

''Over 90,000 diesel vehicles cross Delhi every day and this will bring to a naught the efforts made by Delhi government in introducing CNG to control pollution, she said.

She later told UNI on the sidelines of the Conclave that the Delhi government had offers from two companies to set up plants for garbage segregation at five places, which also include Ghazipur, the Delhi's biggest dumping ground.

We will also use the manpower of scavangers in garbage management in times to come, she said.

Ms Dikshit also laid the stress at the Conclave for a Water Policy for the entire north and the northwest region of the country.

She pointed out that Delhi was facing severe shortage of power as and water and, thus, the national capital was unable to share its power with other states.
