NHAI invests Rs 19,235 crore for NE Highways

Guwahati, Sep 27: The National Highway Authority of India(NHAI) is investing a whopping Rs 19,235 crore to improve the Highways of the North Eastern region in the next 42 months.

''This is by far the biggest infrastructure development project this region has ever witnessed'' said NHAI Chairman Vijay Singh.

Mr Singh also happens to be the Secretary of the Union Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport&Highways.

He is here on a two-day visit to the region for an on the spot assessment of the progress of this gigantic work. which includes the East West Corridor, National Highway Development Programme and Special Accelerated Road Development programme for North east.

He said the East West Corridor is only one part of the whole investment of the NHAI. As far as the East West Corridor is concerned, the total length is 678 km via Haflong and total expenditure is Rs 5,470 crore.

The second one is the National Highway Development Project (NHDP) on Built Own Transfer (BOT) basis through 1,246 km of State Highways which is being strengthened in various parts of the North east at a cost of Rs 9000 crores.

''We are also joining hands with the State PWDs in the Special Accelerated Road Development Programme for North east through which another 733 km of Highways are re-strengthened at a cost of Rs 4765 crore,'' he said.
