Militants kill a police personnal and injured officer in Srinagar

Srinagar, Sep 27 (UNI) Militants struck twice in the summer capital of the Jammu and Kashmir killing a selection grade constable and injuring an officer of the state police this afternoon.

Pakistan based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) has claimed responsibility for both the attacks.

Official sources said militants shot at and critically wounded an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of Jammu and Kashmir police Abdul Gani near Jehangir Chowk at Hari Singh High Streets this afternoon.

Mr Gani, who was on special secretariat duty, received a bullet wound in the head after he was fired at from a very close range, sources said adding he was later admitted to SMHS hospital in a critical condition.

Doctors described his condition as very critical.

Traffic on the busy route leading to civil secretariat and other important offices went off the roads and pedestrians and shopkeepers ran for safety. Later, searches were conducted in the area by the security forces. However, militants managed to escape.

Earlier, militants shot a selection grade constable Ghulam M Malik twice in the head from a very close range at Bohri Kadal in the down town city.

Malik, who was working as a Special Police Officer (SPO) with a sales tax officer, died on way to hospital.

A caller who identified himself a spokesman of the JeM said they killed two security personnel in the city.

This was the second major attacks in the city by militants since the holy month of Ramzan began on September 25 when a grenade blast and selective killings on the first day of the holy month left eight people, including a women constable and a numberdar dead and five others wounded in the Jammu and Kashmir.
