BJP demands special measures to tackle dengue in Delhi

New Delhi, Sep 27 (UNI) Expressing concern over the spread of dengue virus in the capital, opposition BJP in the MCD today called for adoption of special measures to tackle the spread of the disease.

''The fast spread of dengue in the capital is a matter of serious concern. In this context, we demand measures be adopted to tackle the disease as section 376 of the Delhi Municipal Act calls for special measures to tackle the spread of an infectious disease,''BJP Standing Committee member Vijender Gupta told mediapersons here.

According to official figures, as many as nine people have died due to dengue so far and the total number of cases reported has risen to 327.

Mr Gupta pointed out there had been an over two fold rise in the number of dengue cases.

''As against a total of 159 cases of dengue detected last year, 327 cases been reported since January 1 this year. Also, while one person died from the disease in Delhi last year, the figure has risen to three this year,''Mr Gupta said.

Alleging that the figure of the number of deaths due to dengue presented by the Congress Government did not include a nine-year-old girl, Monal Nangia, who died of the disease two days ago, Mr Gupta said,''this shows the MCD is hiding facts. It is possible that the number of people suffering from the disease may be much more than the number put forward by the corporation.'' He lashed out at the Government for not allowing a discussion on the issue in the meeting of the Standing Committee today.

''This shows lack of seriousness on part of the Government to tackle the menace,''he said.
