Two cases of polio detected
Hardwar, Sep 26 (UNI) The detection of two cases of polio in the district has raised a question mark on the entire intensive polio eradication drive being carried out by the WHO.
The sources in the district health department said a three and a half year old child of Garh village, who had been administered polio drops 21 times, was found infected with polio virus.
A nine month old infant of Tikola village, who died a few days ago, had been administered polio drops seven times.
The district where these diseases have come to the fore forms a border with western U.P. which is the most polio infected part of the country.
The CMO in-charge of the district, Dr. B.S. Aswal said the stool samples of both the children tested at Lucknow laboratory and later on at Mumbai laboratory, were found positive. ''The parents of both the children were slum dwellers and the sanitation and nutrition level of the children was very low, rendering them prone to the infection of polio virus'', said Dr.
Aswal.
Expressing grave concern, the district magistrate, R.K.
Sudhanshu told UNI that a detailed inquiry was being held in the matter.
