World Bank and DoNER Ministry to tap NE resources

Aizawl, Sep 25 (UNI) Development of North East Region (DoNER) Ministry and World Bank is conducting a joint survey on the natural resources, water and environment development across the entire Northeastern region.

The survey's sole perspective is to find out how to strategically support development and growth through effective and sustainable investements.

The study would be done in two phases besides overseeing the existing knowledge base on the water and other natural resources of the region.

A series of background blue-prints have been prepared and would serve as a basis for the strategic development report.

The strategy included water resources and geomorphology of various rivers, hydropower and water resources development possibilites, options for inland water transport development, communities and forest management, legal and institutional framework, river basin management and regional biodiversity.

The complete lay out would be finalised by 2006 end after dissemination and approval, official sources said.

DoNER Ministry had requested the world bank to help outline a strategy so that natural resources of the NE contributes towards sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction in the region.
