Govt releases funds for tackling gregarious flowering of bambo

New Delhi, Sep 25 (UNI) The Ministry of Environment and Forests has released the first instalment of Rs 17.82 crore to North Eastern States to tackle the situation of gregarious flowering of Muli Bamboo.

The Ministry has approved Rs 85 crore to implement various schemes for the implementation of the Action Plan. Special exemptions have been declared.

Mizoram will get the highest amount i.e. Rs 23 crore which will be followed by Tripura with Rs 21 Crore. Assam will get Rs 13 Crore, Manipur Rs 9.9 Crore, Nagaland Rs 8 Crore, Meghalaya Rs 6.8 Crore and Arunachal Pradesh Rs 1.5 crore.

The gregarious flowering of bamboos produces large quantities of seeds, which in turn causes sudden rise in the population of rodents. However, the quantity of seeds available for rats soon diminishes as they germinate after rains.

The short supply of seeds and and the swelling population of rats results in the rodents heading towards farmlands in the adjoining areas and causing widespread loss to crops.

Such a chain of events has the potential to cause famine.

For the management of situation that will be created by gregarious flowering of bamboos, an Action Plan of Rs 366 crore has been prepared.

This plan was approved by the steering committee set up by the Ministry of Environment&Forests with representatives from these states and concerned Ministries, other Departments and Agencies.

The North East States will have to raise this amount from their own sources, like the Planning Commission.
