Centre asks states to enforce child labour ban from Oct 10

New Delhi, Sep 25 (UNI) The Centre has written to chief ministers seeking support to enforce the ban on employing children as domestic servants and in the hospital industry.

Labour and Employment Ministry has also urged the state governments to take steps in rehabilitating children withdrawn from work after the ban comes into effect on October 10.

The ban on child labour in restaurants, roadside dhabas, hotels, motels, teashops, resorts and spas besides in homes as domestic servants has been imposed under the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act 1986.

The Labour Ministry had recently issued a notification giving the three-month mandatory notice to implement the ban.

Anyone employing children as domestic servants and in the hospitality industry will be punishable under the Act.

The Labour Ministry has also written to secretaries of government ministries seeking their support in the rehabilitation of children released from work.

The Ministry recently hosted a meeting of the secretaries of the Women and Child Development Ministry, Human Resource Development Ministry, Rural Development Ministry, Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Ministry on the rehabilitation issue, official said.
