Nanjundappa Committee report neglected: Abdul Aziz

Gulbarga, Sep 24 (UNI) Prof Abdul Aziz, one of the members of Nanjundappa Committee that had made wideranging recommendations on development of backward regions of the State, today regretted that the Government was neglecting the recommendations.

Addressing a seminar here on ''development of Hyderabad Karnataka region'' organised by the Hyderabad-Karnataka Chamber of Commerce Prof Aziz reminded that the committee in its report submitted in 2002, suggested a scientific methodology to develop each backward taluk.

Admitting that the H K region, was more backward than others, he explained that the Committee advised the Government to invest Rs 31,000 crore in the backward areas in the state.

He said that the committee had made recommandations keeping in mind the aspirations of people and took people's opinion.

He felt that to develop the areas, Article 371 of the constitution should be amended to enable provision of reservations in educational institutions and government jobs to the people of the region.

He lamented that deprivation level was high in the H K region when compared to other areas and added that the money was being spent in a random manner without proper plan.

Highlighting some of the important recommandations he said the committee had recommanded to evolve a''special plan'' to develop the region, but it was not implemented.

He recalled that successive governments had urged the centre to provide help in this regard but they did not receive.

Speaking on the occasion, Director of Centre for Study and Community and Development Baggi Chandra Sekhar felt that people's sentiments should be kept in view while carrying out development works in the region.
