Heavy squall, rains bring coolness, relief from humidity in Delhi
New Delhi, Sep 22 (UNI) Heavy showers today lashed Delhi, ending the more than week-long lull in rainfall activity in the capital and bringing tremendous relief to Delhiites from the sultry conditions of last week.
The showers that lashed the capital around afternoon brought about a sharp drop in mercury. While the minimum temperature dropped to 25 degrees Celsius, from 26.9 degrees Celsius yesterday, the maximum temperature dropped from 35 degrees Celsius yesterday to 33 degrees Celsius today.
The rain, which followed a build-up of heavy clouds in Delhi towards the afternoon, was accompanied by a heavy squall, which together brought tremendous relief to the people of Delhi from the sultry conditions of last week.
Earlier, this morning also, Delhi experience traces of rain.
The Weatherman attributes the sudden trunaround in the weather in Delhi to the Northwestwards movement of a depression which lay over Jharkhand yesterday.
''The depression moved northwestwards and lay centred at 0830 hrs IST of today about 50 km east of Ranchi. The system is likely to move initially in a north-northwesterly direction,''the weather office said.
Under its influence, widespread rainfall is likely over Bihar, West Bengal and Sikkim and Jharkhand during the next 24 hours.
Fairly widespread rainfall is also likely over East Uttar Pradesh, which, in turn, could result in some rains in Delhi today or tomorrow.
Hot and humid weather has prevailed in Delhi over the last week with a sharp rise in humidity levels adding to the sultry weather conditions.
The weather conditions worsened over the last few days due to the absence of any cool winds to provide relief from the sultry weather.
The weatherman has forecast rain and thundershowers in a few areas of Delhi during the next 24 hours.
