Agartala, Sep 22 (UNI) The Centre has sanctioned Rs 1600 crores for the development of Agartala city.

This was announced by the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation (Independent Charges) Kumari Selja during her recent visit to Shillong.

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, State Urban Development Commissioner Diwakar Chakraborty said the Union Minister had assured all possible help from her department and will take up issues related to various projects pending in the state with the respective ministries.

The Commissioner also said that the state had submitted a detailed report urging for central assistance for the development of the capital city some time ago. ''Various issues like 24-hour water supply, development of roads, parking areas, sanitation etc. have been given more importance in the report,'' said Mr. Chakraborty.

He further added that the state would send a detailed progress report to the Ministry very soon.

Meanwhile, sources revealed to UNI that the the Union Minister had expressed displeasure over the fact that the North Eastern States, including Tripura, were not offering projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM) for which the central contribution is 90 per cent.

They further added that Ms Selja had said her Ministry had not received a single project report from any of the NE states under the Mission. They said Ms Selja had requested the NE states to ensure submission of the detailed project reports prepared as per the guidelines issued by the Ministry so that the projects were appraised and sanctioned.
