Srinagar, Sep 21 (UNI) A village boy took the entire top brass of the Jammu and Kashmir Police for a ride when he pulled the wool over their eyes to win a Maruti car.

Seventeen-year-old Faisal Mirza of Luragam village in Tral area of south Kashmir's Pulwama district duped no less than state Director General of Police Gopal Sharma when he produced a fake lottery ticket to win the car.

The DGP had himself handed over the keys of white Maruti 800 car to the teenager.

Giving details, a senior police officer said on September 4, the young conman approached the DGP office here with a laminated lottery ticket (No: 4822-A) which he claimed to have purchased during the just-concluded police wives welfare festival and had won the second prize, a Maruti 800, in the raffle draw.

He said the officials checked the ticket number with the counter foil and found it correct. After completing the formalities, a White Maruti Car (bearing engine No 365674 and chasis No 2591222) was handed over to him by the DGP, the officer said.

However on September 19, a head constable, Abdul Rashid of 12th battalion, visited the DGP office with a lottery ticket (No: 48822-A) to claim the second prize.

A shocked DGP immediately ordered an inquiry into the entire matter and on investigations it was found that the head constable's ticket was genuine and that the teenager had produced a fake one to claim the prize.

A police team was rushed to Tral to trace the teenager who along with his family in the meantime had shifted to Wanabal in Nowgam area on the city outskirts.

The team nabbed Mirza yesterday and told him that he had by mistake got white-coloured Maruti car instead of a red one and therefore should bring the vehicle to the DGP office.

The young trickster was then arrested and detained at the Shaheed Gunj police station. During questioning, he confessed to have committed the crime. Mirza said after seeing the results of the raffle draw, he conceived an idea about generating a computerised a fake ticket to claim the second prize of Maruti car.

A case under section 420/468 of the Ranbir Penal Code was registered against the young trickster.

The incident has shocked the entire top brass of the Jammu and Kashmir police.

Assistant Inspector General of Police Aftab Ahmed Kakroo said in future a committee would be formed every year during the police wives welfare festival which would award the prizes after proper check of the tickets and the winners.
