Aizawl, Sep 21 (UNI) The Border Security Force (BSF) here today revealed that there was a spurt in the inflow of counterfeit Indian currency from Bangladesh through the porous eastern borders this year.

According to statistics, BSF personnel have seized fake currency worth Rupees five lakh. About 16 times more than last year's Rs 34,000.

About 100 people in West Bengal, Tripura, Asom and Mizoram were arrested in this regard.

BSF sources said the border force has registered about 20 fresh cases of drug smuggling and fake currencies.

The increase in such illegal activities had become a matter of great concern for the BSF which is already struggling to check infiltration and cattle smuggling along the 4096 km Indo-Bangladesh border.

BSF officials said the dense habitation near the zero line and unfenced patches are the prime reasons behind illegal activities as it provides adequate cover to the smugglers.

To check such activities the BSF has suggested conversion of 150 yards from the border line into an 'exclusive zone', where cultivation and habitation would not be allowed.

The BSF had proposed to the Union Home Ministry to implement multi-purpose identity card scheme for people living in border areas for easy verification.

The identity cards would carry detailed information about the person, they said.

It also urged the Centre to accelarate the fencing work along the border.

Of the 4,095 km Indo-Bangla border, the government had sanctioned fencing of 3,280 km, out of which only 2,100 km had been completed.
