Lucknow, Sep 21 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh State Human Rights Commission today slammed the state police for human rights violations at police station level.

The latest Commission report was tabled in the state legislative Assembly today.

The report lamented it had received several complaints of human rights violations during custody.

Most complaints received pertain to mental and physical torture.

''There have been complaints of non-filing of FIRs and letting off criminals by lodging complaints in minor sections of IPC,'' the report claimed.

''Although some allegations are over hyped, there can be no smoke without fire...the citizens are not getting justice,'' the report in Hindi claimed.

The report maintained the government has to address the issue so that the problem could be removed from roots. ''Punishing guilty policeman only would not help...the Commission has started the process and would soon inform the government of ways to turn police into a healthy and sensitive organisation.

The report also highlighted the need to encourage cops who want to help citizens in a senstive way. ''Although sensitising the cops is a giagantic task, we hope to attain success,'' it concluded.
