Kerala Govt Act counters SC order on Dam issue: DPA
Chennai, Sep 20: The ruling DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) today said it was a matter of regret that the Kerala Government had enacted an Act, which ran counter to the Supreme Court order on the Mullaiperiyar Dam issue.
The DPA, in a resolution adopted at the meeting chaired by DMK President and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi here, urged the Kerala Government to extend its cooperation to implement the Supreme Court order, allowing to increase the height of the dam from 136 ft to 142 ft.
''It is a matter of deep concern and regret that the Kerala Government after the apex court's order, had passed a legislation to prevent its implementation,'' the resolution said.
The DPA meeting, convened to discuss about the local body elections and October 11 by-poll to Madurai Central assembly constituency, was attended among others by TNCC president M Krishnassamy, PMK leader S Ramadoss, CPI(M) leader N Varadarajan, CPI leader D Pandian and IUML leader K M Kadher Mohideen.
The DPA, in another resolution, demanded the DMK government come out with a ''White Paper'' on how the files suffered inordinate delays during the previous Jayalalithaa regime, bringing to halt a number of welfare projects.
The white paper on how the administration, during the previous Jayalalithaa regime had come to a standstill would be an eye-opener to officials and ministers on matters relating to people's issues, the resolution said. This would also help the people to come to know as how the administration functioned in an irresponsbile manner during the previous AIADMK regime, especially after Mr Karunanidhi had exposed this with material evidences, it said.
In another resoltuion, the DPA urged the government to organise awareness camps, involving the state health department, general public, voluntary organisations and educational institutions on the the Chikungunya menace.
The government should also conduct medical camps and provide emergency treatments to the affected people, it said.
The DPA, in another resolution, decided to constitute state level and district level committees on fielding of candidates and launching electioneering for the October 13 and 15 local body elections. The work should commence from tomorrow, it was decided.
