Chandigarh, Sep 19 (UNI) The Haryana assembly today passed important bills on setting up a women university and private universities in the state, besides amending the Panchayati Raj (PR) bill to abolish the two-child norm for Panchayat representatives.

The Bhagat Phool Singh Mahila Vishwavidyala at Khanpur Kalan in Sonepat district would be teaching-cum-affiliating university aimed at promoting women in the field of higher education.

The university would lay special emphasis on emerging areas of Information Technology, Computer Education, Medical Sciences, Bio-technology, Environmental Studies, Technology and Management Studies and achieve excellence in these and connected fields, as per statement of objects and reasons of the bill.

Haryana would be a pioneer state in North India to establish a state university for women to lay focus on professional and advanced studies.

There are five universities and three deemed universities in the state and all these universities are co-educational. There is no separate women university in the state.

The Bhagat Phool Singh Mahila Vishwavidyala, Khanpur Kalan Bill replaces an ordinance passed by the Hooda government earlier this year.

Speaking on the bill, Education Minister Phool Chand Mullana said Haryana would be the pioneering state in Northern India to establish a state-run university for women with focus on professional and advanced studies.
