2 accused held guilty in 1993 Mumbai blasts case

Mumbai, Sep 18: Two more accused - Asgar Mukadam and Shahnavaz Quereshi - were today found guilty of involvement in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts that had claimed 257 lives and left over 700 people wounded.

Designated TADA Judge Pramod Kode found them guilty under the various sections of Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act, Indian Penal Code, Explosive Substances Act and the Arms Act.

They were held guilty of planting bombs in Plaza Cinema Hall at Dadar in Central Mumbai, in which 10 people were killed and 36 injured on March 12, 1993 when a total of 13 serial bomb blasts rocked the megapolis.

Mukadam and Quereshi had driven an explosive-laden car into the premises of the cinema hall and parked it near the western wall of the building where it had exploded resulting in casualties.

Both the accused were identified by the two witnesses.

The quantum of sentence on the convicts will be decided later by the court.

Of the total 123 accused in the case, six, including four members of the Memon family, have been convicted so far, while four other members of the Memon family were discharged for want of sufficient evidence against them.

Mukadam is the second planter convicted in the case; the first was Mohammed Sohaib Ghansar.
