Former India soccer captain passes away
Kolkata, Sep 18 (UNI) Former India captain and classy defender Sudip Chatterjee died in a city hospital here this evening.
He was 47.
One of the finest Indian defenders the country has produced, Chatterjee was suffering from nervous problem for long. He had to be hospitalised after a piece of guava got stuck in his throat.
Chatterjee, who enthralled the city's Maidan in the 1980s, captained India from 1984 to 1989, one of the longest ever by a footballer.
Chatterjee's over Rs 2,00,000 transfer from East Bengal to Mohun Bagan in the mid-eighties was one of the highest paid.
He played mostly for East Bengal and is considered one of the few soccer players who could match up to international standards.
The entire football fraternity in Kolkata mourned the death of the footballer.
