Karnataka government to ban sale of Arrack from next year

Mysore, Sep 17: Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy today announced that sale of arrack in the state would be banned from next year.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone for Rs 14.50 crore drinking water project at Yelavala village, near here, he said a decision to this effect would be taken soon as many women, where ever he visits, were demanding ban on sale of arrack as it has ruined their family.

Earlier, his brother and P W D Minister H D Revanna had urged the Chief Minister to take decision on ban of arrack in the larger interest of the forming community which were most affected.

Mr Kumaraswamy said that ration cards will be provided to all those belonging to Below Poverty Line (BPL) and asked them to apply within the stipulated time and instructions have been given to the all the district administrations in this regard and even the many exemptions has been given to provide the ration cards.

The Chief Minister reiterated that the Government would adopt 1000 villages every year and spend Rs One Crore each for overall development of the village. During the next seven to eight years time all the villages in the State would developed and he would lay the foundation for this during his tenure as Chief Minister in next 13 months time.

Referring to the criticism by former Minister and Congress leader R V Deshpande over his family wealth, Mr Kumaraswamy pointed out that his family members have submitted their assets to the Lok Ayukta as well as to the Income Tax department and accepted his challenge about the probe on this issue. He said he would tour next week North Karnataka, including Gulbarga, Raichur and other parts and visit to the various villages to know the facts and figures, since the North Karnataka villages were neglected by previous governments.

Minister for Power H D Revanna, speaking on the occasion, announced that nearly 18,000 families in the Chamundeswari Assembly constituency would be provided with electricity in next four months time.

He said nearly 54 lakh families in the state would provided with electricity to their houses by spending Rs 1200 crore.
