Optimisation of lifestyle a must for regressing CAD: Experts

New Delhi, Sep 15 (UNI) With India projected to have 60 per cent of the world heart patients by 2010, experts today recommended optimisation of lifestyle from childhood by regular exercise, meditation, vegetarian diet and complete abstinence from tobacco to regress coronary artery disease (CAD).

The experts observed that nurturing the mind with positive thoughts and negating cynicism, jealousy, hatred and anger will help curb the disease.

They opinioned that drug combination of Aspirin, Ramipril and Statins as a combination of polypill for mass consumption would also lower the risk of CAD.

With CAD, which lead to heart attacks, assuming pandemic proportions the world over, more than 2,500 delegates will discuss the prevention, regression and reversal of CAD at World Congress on Clinical and Preventive Cardiology, in Mount Abu, Rajasthan.

The conference, to commence from September 22, is being organsied by the Cardiology Society of India, Asia Pacific Society of Cardiology, Defence Research and Development Organisation, Ministry of Defence, International Medical Sciences Academy and Brahma Kumari's Global Hospital and Research Centre.

President A P J Abdul Kalam will present WCCPC 2006 Lifetime Achievement Award and Distinguished Service Award to doctors from India and abroad here on September 25.

WCCPC organising chairman H K Chopra said prevention is the only cost effective method to curb the rising trend of CVD in India as expensive modern tertiary care was beyond the means of the common man.

Announcing the WCCPC at a news conference, Mr Chopra said Indians faced a high risk of CAD because of genetic vulnerability and faulty lifestyles, including lack of exercise, consumption of junk food, high levels of stress, including hostility and negative competition.

''Heart care awareness, preventive strategies, including lifestyle optimisation by brisk walking and yoga and consumption of fruits and vegetables will keep the disease away.'' he explained.

DRDO Chief Controller Dr W Selvamurthy said healthy heart lifestyle programme is user friendly and cost effective abd should be routinely used by a large population for curtailing the progression of CAD.

''Vegetarianism, moderate aerobic exercise and stress management through yoga have significantly reduce morbidity and mortality,'' he added.
