Manipur Assembly monsoon session begins, temple blast condemned

Imphal, Sep 15 (UNI) The monsoon session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly began here today amid tight security.

Security has been beefed up in and around the Assembly premises.

Even mobile phones were not allowed inside the assembly.

The House condemned the recent attacks on religious congregations at Manipur.

Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh tabled the Manipur Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (amendment) rules 2006 and annual report of state vigilance commission.

The Chief Minister informed the House that the inquiry into the ISKCON temple blast on August 16, which killed six persons, were on progress.

The Chief Minister revealed that some evidences have been gathered in this regard.

He said, ''Let the police take its own time. Police has unearthed the killing of a police officer recently. Two human rights activists were also apprehended for alleged links with militants but it is not known if they were involved in the temple blasts.'' The House then decided to condemn the attack on the ISCKON temple.

BJP MLA B D Behring, moving a call attention motion, said the government should try to find out those involved in the attacks on the temple and take action against those responsible for attacking the Evangelical Baptist Church on August 20 killing one person.

L Ibomcha also took part in the discussion. Dr Nimaichand Luwang raised the issue of the poor condition of the National Highway in Manipur.

The session is scheduled to conclude on September 18.
