TN Govt to exempt oil cakes, peanuts from ST levy

Chennai, Sept 14 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Goverment today decided to exempt oil cakes and peanuts from levy of sales tax.

A decision to this effect was taken at a state cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi at Secretariat here.

The Cabinet also decided to allot two IT companies -- Wipro and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) -- 10 five acres of land respectively in Coimbatore, an official release said.

The release said the then DMK Government allotted houses for the families of 19 soldiers from Tamil Nadu, who laid down their lives in the Kargil war during 1999-2000. But, the previous AIADMK regime did not take a decision on exemption of stamp duty and registration fee for registering the sale deed and kept the concerned file pending.

The Cabinet discussed the matter and decided to extend the exemption, it added.

It was also decided to exempt stamp duty and registration fee for a private organisation which proposed to acquire 1,061 acres of land in Nagapattinam and distribute it to landless farm workers one acre each.

The Cabinet also decided to effect a change in the Government Order issued in the year 2000 to exempt stampt duty and registration fee for distribution of land to 550 landless farm workers belonging to Adi Dravidar community.

As per the request of Ambedhkar Makkal Sangam, the term 'gift deed' would be changed as 'sale deed' for the benefit of Adi Dravidars, the release added.
