Patil calls for popularity of the Hindi language

New Delhi, Sep 14 (UNI) Home Minister Shivraj Patil today called for translation of rich knowledge resources of other regional and international languages into Hindi and vice versa.

Inaugurating the 'Hindi Divas' celebrations here, he said by the increased use of new technology, the usage of Hindi could be increased.

Speaking on the popularity of Hindi, Mr Patil said Hindi Movie industry had played an unparalleled role in popularising Hindi.

''TV channels are also playing an important role in this regard.'' Earlier, Minister of State for Home Manikrao H Gavit underlined the need for paying more attention to the promotion of Hindi in official work. Minister of State for Home S Regupathy was also present on the occasion.

Mr Devdas Chhotray, Secretary, Department of Official Languages, mentioned about the various on-going schemes and programmes of the Department for the promotion of Hindi in official work.

On this occasion, Mr Patil also unveiled 'Shrutlekhan-Rajbhasha', Hindi speaker independent continuous speech recognition system, the first of its kind in the world. This is an application where a user speaks in Hindi and the uttered speech gets transcribed into Hindi Unicode text form. This is developed by the Centre for the Development of Advanced Computing C-DAC, Pune.

To promote the use of Hindi in offices, the Home Minister unveiled the translation tool 'Mantra' for Administrative, Finance, Agriculture and Small-scale industries Domains. This tool, developed by the Centre for the Development of Advanced Computing, Pune (C-DAC), is designed to assist the various departments and ministries of the government to create quick and effective standard Hindi translations of English Documents. This software is being made available on the Internet also.

Mr Patil also inaugurated the facility of learning the 'LILA Hindi Prabodh, Praveen and Pragya curriculum' on the worldwide web through the medium of Oriya, Assamese, Manipuri and Marathi.

He also gave away the Indira Gandhi Rajbhasha awards for the year 2004-05. These Awards are given every year to the Ministries and Departments of the Government of India, Nationalised Banks and Financial Institutions, Public Sector Undertakings and Town Official Language Implementation Committees for promoting the use of Hindi in their official work. Cash Awards were given to the employees of the Central Government for writing original books in Hindi on the subjects relating to their official work.
